Vegan sushi in Tokyo is rare: book Vegan Sushi Tokyo near Shinsen (sets from ¥5,300) or Veggie Sushi Japan in Asakusabashi (from ¥3,000). Chain tips too.
Introduction
Vegan sushi in Tokyo comes down to a short list: Vegan Sushi Tokyo near Shinsen Station in Shibuya (sets from ¥5,300), Veggie Sushi Japan in Asakusabashi (weekday lunch from ¥3,000 + tax), and Gonpachi in Shibuya and Nishi-Azabu, whose separate vegan menu lists six vegan nigiri for ¥1,980. Udatsu sells a vegan-compatible course and Ginza Sushi Yuu a vegetarian one, for a much bigger budget.
Be realistic before you go: dedicated vegan sushi is rare in Tokyo. Most sushi shops are built around fish, and even plain-looking items such as inari or miso soup can hide fish ingredients. We checked five places against their own booking pages, official menus and Tabelog listings in 2026, and we only included a place if its own site says vegan or vegetarian. We found no dedicated vegan sushi restaurant in Shinjuku (see how to choose for the nearest options), and the conveyor-belt chain we checked has a clear red flag, covered below.

1. Vegan Sushi Tokyo (ヴィーガンスシトーキョー) — all-vegan sets from ¥5,300 near Shinsen Station
Vegan Sushi Tokyo says on its own pages that it is an all-vegan restaurant in Shibuya where, in its words, everything from sushi to desserts is vegan. It describes itself as Tokyo's first vegan sushi restaurant (its own claim) and was founded by three vegans. The sets replace classic toppings with vegetables and Japanese vegan products. It is in Shoto, Shibuya-ku, about 250 m from Shinsen Station on the Keio Inokashira line and walkable from Shibuya. Tabelog shows it opened at this address on 1 December 2025, after moving from Dogenzaka.
You book a set rather than order a la carte. The Premium Set (¥5,300) is 10 pieces of sushi, five condiments of your choice, miso soup, gari, a yuzu drink and dessert. The Sake Set (¥6,000) adds a three-sake tasting. Gluten-free and "Oriental Vegetarian" versions (no five pungent vegetables) cost ¥5,400 and ¥6,100, as do the mushroom-free and "Simple 4" versions. The booking page does not say which stock the miso soup uses, but the whole menu is vegan, so ask when booking if you need to be sure.

Insider tip
Older directory pages still show the former Dogenzaka location and lower prices. Use the TableCheck page for the current address and set prices, and book before you travel, because every set is prepaid.
2. Veggie Sushi Japan (ヴィーガン寿司専門店) — weekday vegan lunch from ¥3,000 in Asakusabashi
Veggie Sushi Japan is a dedicated vegan sushi shop (ヴィーガン寿司専門店) on the ground floor of Little Japan Hotel in Asakusabashi, about 7 minutes from Asakusabashi Station and about 5 minutes by taxi from Asakusa Station, according to its official site. The FAQ says all dishes are 100% vegan, so they suit both vegans and vegetarians, and the shop offers full English menus with English-speaking staff.
It serves weekday lunch only (Mon-Fri 11:30-14:30). The Veggie Sushi Set is 11 pieces, appetizers and miso soup for ¥4,000 + tax. The Vegan Sushi Roll Set is ¥3,000 + tax, and the set with miso soup and a matcha drink is ¥4,700 + tax. The menu includes a stewed bean curd with "original dashi"; because the shop says every dish is vegan this is a plant-based stock, but the ingredients are not published. Some items (matcha drinks, rolls, house sake) are marked "Coming soon" on the site, so confirm the ¥3,000 roll set is available when you book.
Check before you go: reviews on HappyCow, with replies from the business, mention a temporary location and an upcoming move. Check Instagram or the official site for the current address before you head out.

Insider tip
Ignore the leftover template text on the official page (garlic bread, baked clams); it is not their menu.
3. Udatsu Sushi (宇田津 鮨) — vegan-compatible omakase at ¥30,250 in Nakameguro
Udatsu Sushi is a high-end sushi counter in Kamimeguro, Meguro-ku, about a 10-minute walk from Nakameguro Station. Its official menu lists a vegetarian course described as vegan-compatible and all-vegetable (ベジタリアンコース ヴィーガン対応・野菜づくしのコース), available at lunch or dinner. The price is ¥30,250 with tax and service included, and you need to book at least two days ahead. Say you are vegan when you reserve.
This is the pick for a vegan or vegetarian who wants an omakase counter. The same shop also uses a blend of three pesticide-free rice vinegars from Iio Jozo for its sushi rice, and the vegetable menu includes a herb roll (ハーブ巻) made with pesticide-free herbs.
Read the booking rules before you commit. Udatsu's reservation notes say it cannot accept guests who need separate cooking utensils, that cooking sake is used (guests who cannot have alcohol even when cooked off are refused), and that soy sauce and miso are used, so it is not gluten-free. In practice the vegetable course comes out of the same kitchen as the fish courses. For more counter options see our Tokyo omakase guide.
What to order
- Vegetarian / vegan-compatible course (¥30,250)
- Herb roll (ハーブ巻) with pesticide-free herbs, listed on the official menu

- Budget: ¥30,250 vegetarian course, tax and service included

- Vegan status: Listed as vegan-compatible on the official menu; shared kitchen and equipment with fish
- Source: Official menu
Insider tip
Mention you are vegan when booking, and ask in the same message whether dashi is used. If you need a kitchen with separate utensils, Udatsu says it cannot accommodate that, so choose an all-vegan place instead.
4. Gonpachi Shibuya and Nishi-Azabu (権八) — 6 vegan nigiri for ¥1,980 from a printed vegan menu
Gonpachi runs two sushi-friendly restaurants in Shibuya and two in Nishi-Azabu, and all of them publish an English and Japanese vegan menu as a PDF. It lists vegan nigiri and rolls alongside grilled vegetable dishes, so it is the easiest walk-in option when your group is mixed (some eat fish, some do not). At Sushi Gonpachi Shibuya (E Space Tower 14F) the vegan assortment is 6 nigiri for ¥1,980 and a vegan roll is ¥1,320; single nigiri such as avocado, myoga and okra are ¥330 each. Sushi Gonpachi Shibuya also lists a ¥6,050 vegan platter called "Vegan's Paradise". The Nishi-Azabu restaurants use the same vegan menu.
Confirm current availability. The vegan menu PDFs on the official site carry 2023 and 2024 dates in their filenames, so prices and items may have changed. Reviewers on HappyCow also report that vegan sushi is dinner-only at some branches and that a grilled-eggplant special once arrived with bonito flakes. Order from the vegan menu, not the specials, and note the official warning that tempura uses the same oil and flour as the regular items.
What to order
- Vegan nigiri, 6 pieces (¥1,980)
- Vegan roll (¥1,320)
- Grilled vegetable skewers (¥1,320)
Practical info
- Location (Shibuya): E Space Tower 14F, 3-6 Maruyamacho, Shibuya-ku (Sushi Gonpachi and Gonpachi are both on 14F)
- Nearest station (Shibuya): Shinsen Station 3 minutes, Keio Shibuya 5 minutes, JR Shibuya 8 minutes

- Vegan status: Items on the official vegan menu only; same kitchen and the same tempura oil and flour as non-vegan dishes
- Source: Official vegan menu (PDF, 2024)
Insider tip
Order from the vegan menu, not from specials. If you plan to eat at lunch, call ahead to confirm that vegan sushi is served then, because we could not verify it. Tell the server "だしを使わないでください" (please make it without dashi) if you need a stock-free dish.
5. Ginza Sushi Yuu (銀座 鮨 佑) — vegetarian sushi course, not stated vegan
Ginza Sushi Yuu is an 8-seat counter in the basement of Kobikis Ginza. Its official menu lists a dinner "Vegetarian sushi course" of 8-10 nigiri, 2-3 small dishes (tsumami) and 2 rolls. The course was announced on 5 April 2024 as a new dinner offer and lists halal soy sauce (ハラール醤油対応). It is described as vegetarian, not vegan, so do not assume it excludes egg or dairy, and ask when you book. Tabelog's shop text does mention a vegan menu, so a request for a fully vegan version is worth making.
The course sits at the top-tier price on the official menu page, about ¥50,000 including tax and service, and bookings need at least one week's notice. Confirm the price when you reserve, as we read it from the menu layout.
What to order
- Vegetarian sushi course: 8-10 nigiri, 2-3 tsumami and 2 rolls
- Ask by phone whether the course can be made fully vegan
Practical info
- Address: Kobikis Ginza B1F, 3-14-17 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
- Nearest station: Higashi-Ginza Station 3 minutes; Ginza Station 5 minutes

- English menu: Not confirmed; the official site has an English version
- Reservation: At least 1 week ahead, by phone on 03-6264-0165 or via TableCheck. The vegetarian course was not visible as a TableCheck item, so phone may be needed. TableCheck cancellation: 50% from 48 hours, 100% from 24 hours
- Vegan status: Vegetarian only, not stated as vegan
- Source: Official menu
What to avoid at conveyor-belt chains
Conveyor-belt sushi is cheap, and a hard place to eat vegan. Kura Sushi publishes an allergen chart, which makes it a useful test case. We read the chart dated 2 October 2026 for Kura Sushi Shibuya Ekimae (Shibuya Daiichi Kangin Kyodo Bldg 7F, 23-3 Udagawacho, about 5 minutes on foot from Shibuya Station). Nothing on Kura's menu is labelled vegan or vegetarian. Here is what the chart shows:
- Inari: Kura's allergen chart lists mackerel (さば) in its inari, plus wheat and soy. Skip it.
- Corn: contains egg, wheat, milk, soy and apple. Nasu umani (simmered eggplant) contains egg, wheat, milk and soy.
- Cucumber roll: no allergen-ingredient marks, only "same production line" marks. Natto: soy plus shared-line marks. Kanpyo roll: wheat and soy plus shared-line marks.
- Sushi rice (shari, 合わせ酢): none of the 26 listed allergens.
- Soup: the "Kura dashi" (くら出汁) carries allergen marks including soy, so avoid soups.
- Dashi cannot be ruled out: the chart does not cover bonito (katsuo) or kombu, so a dish can still contain fish stock.
- Cross-contact: Kura says its items are handled at processing centres and stores that use many ingredients, and most rolls are marked as made on the same line as egg, wheat, milk, shrimp, crab, salmon, mackerel, chicken and pork products.

If you still end up at a chain, the safest items are ones that are plant-based by ingredient: kappa maki (cucumber roll), oshinko or takuan maki (pickle roll), kanpyo maki (gourd), natto maki or gunkan, ume-shiso maki, avocado, eggplant nigiri and myoga. Vegetable plates at Kura cost ¥110-¥120. These items are not guaranteed vegan, as the inari and nasu umani results above show. Tamago always contains egg and often dashi. HappyCow reviewers report that Sushiro's inari is simmered in fish stock and that its fryer is shared; that is secondary information, and we found no vegan labelling for Sushiro. For more on Kura's branches see our Kura Sushi Tokyo guide, and for other chains see conveyor belt sushi in Tokyo.
How to choose
By budget
- Around ¥2,000: the vegan nigiri set at Gonpachi (¥1,980, plus a dinner minimum charge of ¥1,100 per person at Sushi Gonpachi Shibuya).
- ¥3,000-¥6,100: Veggie Sushi Japan for weekday lunch or Vegan Sushi Tokyo for a prepaid set.
- ¥30,000 and up: Udatsu Sushi (vegan-compatible) or Ginza Sushi Yuu (vegetarian).
By area
- Shibuya: Vegan Sushi Tokyo is in Shoto, near Shinsen Station, and Gonpachi is in E Space Tower, also close to Shinsen. Both are walkable from Shibuya Station.
- Shinjuku: We found no dedicated vegan sushi restaurant in Shinjuku. HappyCow reported only limited vegan options at Sushiro Shinjuku Nishiguchi (May 2025). The nearest options are Vegan Sushi Tokyo in Shibuya and Gonpachi Shibuya. For a vegan dinner inside Shinjuku, see our vegan ramen in Shinjuku guide.
- Asakusabashi / Asakusa: Veggie Sushi Japan (weekdays only).
- Nakameguro, Ginza, Nishi-Azabu: Udatsu Sushi, Ginza Sushi Yuu and Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu respectively.
By style

- Omakase with a vegetable course: Udatsu (vegan-compatible) and Ginza Sushi Yuu (vegetarian).
How to check if sushi is vegan in Japan: rice, dashi, mirin and soy sauce
Sushi looks simple, but a few ingredients decide whether it is vegan.
- Sushi rice: Seasoned with vinegar, sugar and salt. Kura's chart lists its sushi rice seasoning (合わせ酢) with none of the 26 allergens, and we found no primary source saying a chain adds fish to its rice. Some shops add kombu, which is vegan. If you are strict, ask.
- Dashi: Japanese stock, usually made from bonito flakes (katsuobushi) and/or kombu. Japan's mandatory allergen labels do not include bonito or kombu, so an allergen chart cannot tell you whether fish dashi is used.
- Miso soup, nikiri and tsume glazes: Frequently made with fish stock at ordinary sushi shops, so ask.
- Soy sauce and mirin: Soy sauce contains wheat. Mirin, a sweet rice seasoning containing alcohol, is vegan but matters for halal diners; Asakusa Sushi Ken removed mirin, according to a 2015 Halal Media Japan article (see our halal sushi in Tokyo guide).

FAQ
- Is there vegan sushi in Tokyo?
- Yes, but it is rare. Vegan Sushi Tokyo in Shoto, Shibuya has all-vegan sets from ¥5,300, and Veggie Sushi Japan in Asakusabashi serves 100% vegan sushi sets at weekday lunch from ¥3,000 + tax (confirm the ¥3,000 roll set is available when you book). Gonpachi in Shibuya and Nishi-Azabu has a vegan menu with 6 nigiri for ¥1,980, and Udatsu Sushi lists a vegan-compatible vegetable course at ¥30,250.
- Is sushi rice vegan?
- Usually yes. Sushi rice is seasoned with vinegar, sugar and salt, and Kura Sushi's allergen chart lists its sushi rice seasoning with none of the 26 allergens. We found no primary source saying a chain adds fish to its rice, but if you are strict, ask the staff.
- Is inari sushi vegan?
- Not always. Kura Sushi's allergen chart lists mackerel in its inari, and HappyCow reviewers report that Sushiro's inari is simmered in fish stock. Ask before ordering inari unless you are at an all-vegan restaurant.
- Can vegans eat at conveyor-belt sushi like Kura or Sushiro?
- It is difficult. Nothing on Kura's menu is labelled vegan, most rolls are made on lines shared with fish, egg and dairy products, and the allergen chart does not cover bonito or kombu. Plain cucumber, natto or avocado items are the safest choices, but they are not guaranteed vegan.
- Where can I find vegan sushi in Shibuya or Shinjuku?
- In Shibuya, try Vegan Sushi Tokyo near Shinsen Station or Gonpachi in E Space Tower. We found no dedicated vegan sushi restaurant in Shinjuku (HappyCow, May 2025, lists only limited vegan options at Sushiro Shinjuku Nishiguchi), so the nearest options are in Shibuya.
- Is there vegan omakase in Tokyo?
- Udatsu Sushi in Nakameguro lists a vegetarian course described as vegan-compatible and all-vegetable at ¥30,250, booked at least 2 days ahead. It uses a shared kitchen with fish. Ginza Sushi Yuu offers a vegetarian sushi course that is not stated as vegan.
- How do I say "no dashi" in Japanese?
- Say "だしを使わないでください" (Dashi o tsukawanaide kudasai) for please make it without dashi, or "これにかつおだしは入っていますか?" (Kore ni katsuo-dashi wa haitte imasu ka?) to ask whether a dish contains bonito stock.
- Do I need to book vegan sushi restaurants?
- Yes. Vegan Sushi Tokyo takes prepaid bookings on TableCheck, Veggie Sushi Japan requires advance booking, Udatsu needs at least 2 days' notice, and Ginza Sushi Yuu needs at least 1 week. Gonpachi takes web bookings on Toreta or by phone.
Plan your visit
Book the dedicated places first (Vegan Sushi Tokyo is prepaid and Veggie Sushi Japan runs weekday lunch only), confirm Veggie Sushi Japan's address and Gonpachi's vegan menu before you travel, and keep the Japanese phrases on your phone.
