The best ramen in Shinjuku: 10 shops from ¥950, from Menya Sho's chicken shio to Nagi's 24-hour niboshi. Exits, hours, cash vs card and queue times.
Introduction
The best ramen in Shinjuku comes down to ten shops within about ten minutes of Shinjuku Station, with bowls from ¥950 in 2026: chicken shio at Menya Sho, fish-bone shio at Menya Kaijin, Kurume tonkotsu at Tatsunoya, spicy miso tanmen at Nakamoto and 24-hour niboshi at Nagi in Golden Gai. Most of them sell bowls from a ticket machine, and several are cash only, so this guide gives exits, hours, payment and queue notes for each one.
We chose the ten by checking each shop's official page where one exists, and its Tabelog listing in October 2026, and we only quote prices from official menus or 2026 Tabelog reviews; the one exception is AFURI, whose prices come from a Tabelog menu updated in August 2025. Where a price or an English menu could not be confirmed, we say so instead of guessing. The order is a rough walking route, not a strict ranking.

4. Fuunji (風雲児) — Tsukemen from ¥1,000, 2 min from Shinjuku Station
Fuunji is the tsukemen benchmark just south of Shinjuku Station, covered in depth in our Shinjuku tsukemen guide and the best tsukemen in Tokyo ranking. Expect thick chicken-and-fish dipping broth, medium-thick straight noodles, 15 counter seats and fast turnover. The address is technically Shibuya-ku (Yoyogi 2-chome), but it is a Shinjuku Station shop. Reviews describe about 20-35 minutes from joining the line to eating. The photo below is a generic tsukemen bowl from a Tokyo restaurant, not Fuunji's.

5. Nagi Golden Gai Honkan (すごい煮干ラーメン凪) — Niboshi ramen, open 24 hours
Nagi's original Golden Gai shop serves intense niboshi (dried sardine) ramen up a steep staircase, and the official page lists it as open 24 hours, so it works as a late-night plan. It is listed in Tabelog's Hyakumeiten selection for 2017 (per the official page). The 10-seat L-shaped counter is on the second floor, so it is not a good fit for luggage or strollers. Reviews show no line at 13:00 on a weekday and about 10 minutes at 14:00 on a Saturday.

Nagi sits in the middle of Golden Gai's bar alleys, which are worth a wander after your bowl. If you would rather explore them with a local, our Shinjuku food tour covers the area's izakaya and tiny bars.
6. Ramen Tatsunoya (ラーメン龍の家) — Kurume tonkotsu from about ¥1,050

7. Moko Tanmen Nakamoto (蒙古タンメン中本) — Spicy miso tanmen with a 0-10 heat scale
Nakamoto is the spicy pick. This is moko tanmen, a vegetable-heavy miso tanmen topped with spicy mapo tofu, not Sichuan-style tantanmen. Every bowl has a heat level on a 0-10 scale, and the heat-0 shio tanmen is there for anyone who cannot handle spice. Start below your usual spice tolerance; the heat scale is posted on the menu, and the extreme end is very hot.

How to choose
By budget. The cheapest verified bowl is Fuunji's ramen at ¥950; ¥1,000 buys Menya Sho or Menya Kaijin shio ramen, Fuunji tsukemen or Nakamoto's shio tanmen. Plan on ¥1,200 to ¥1,600 once you add a topping or a special bowl; Nagi is about ¥1,500, Sho's special bowl is ¥1,500, and AFURI's vegan ramen is ¥1,990.
By area. For the west side, the Nishi-Shinjuku 7-chome cluster has Menya Sho, Tatsunoya, Nakamoto and Musashi, so you can switch shops if a line is long. For the east and southeast side, try Hayashida, Menya Kaijin and Ichiran. For Kabukicho, go to Nagi. Fuunji is just south of the south exit, and AFURI is inside Lumine 1.
By time of day. Open 24 hours: both Ichiran branches (Chuo-Higashiguchi and Kabukicho) and the Nagi Golden Gai Honkan, though Nagi posts occasional daytime closures. Until 08:00: Kamukura in Kabukicho. Until 04:00: Hakata Tenjin Shinjuku Higashiguchi Ekimae (Shinjuku 3-22-13, cash only, per Tabelog). Until 23:00: Hayashida, Nakamoto, Manrai, and Menya Kaijin on Fridays and Saturdays.
How ramen ticket machines work in Shinjuku
Most shops here sell bowls through a ticket machine (kenbaiki) at the entrance. Choose your bowl, pay, take the ticket and hand it to the staff, who may ask about noodle firmness, richness or portion (Musashi asks assari or kotteri). Tatsunoya asks you to buy the ticket before you join the line.
Many machines are cash-first, so carry ¥1,000 notes and coins. Tatsunoya's machine takes cash, cards and QR, and Ichiran's also takes IC cards.
